Koh Kood (also known as Ko Kut) is the second biggest island in the Mu Koh Chang Archipelago after Koh Chang itself and the fourth largest in Thailand. It is also the most southerly island in the group and the most easterly, being very close to Cambodian waters. Koh Kood is 25km in length and 12km wide, covering a total area of just over 100km². Like Koh Chang it is covered in dense tropical forest and was described in 2010 by London’s Guardian newspaper as one of Thailand’s last remaining unspoilt islands; the largest island to earn this tag. {timg title:=”Koh Kood” thumb:=”images/stories/srv/properties/kohchangmarina/marinepark/kood4small.jpg” img:=”images/stories/srv/properties/kohchangmarina/marinepark/kood4.jpg” gal:=”gallery-content”} Although there is no road circumnavigating Koh Kood, the island does have some degree of infrastructure including a number of villages and fishing communities, a small hospital, schools and a police station. Some parts of the island receive mains electricity, but elsewhere many homes and resorts rely on their own generators. Tourists wanting to visit Koh Kood can opt for regular boats from Laem Sok on the mainland or get a boat from Bang Bao on Koh Chang. Sailors and boat owners wanting to explore around Koh Kood can suit themselves. There are plenty of accommodation options on Koh Kood ranging from homestays to exclusive resorts – something for everyone. The beaches of Koh KoodAs with elsewhere in the archipelago, the best beaches are to be found on the west coast of Koh Kood. The beaches at Tapao and Khlong Chao are the most accessible, best supplied with accommodation and therefore the busiest. However elsewhere along the coast there are many secluded spots where those seeking solitude can wallow in their own private beach paradise. Some the best smaller beaches have been bagged by the exclusive resorts for their private use but the atmosphere on Koh Kood is very relaxed and no one is likely to mind wherever you set out your towel. Other beaches are only accessible from the sea, which gives boat owners a range of options if they are seeking a good private spot. Things to do on Koh KoodMany people want to do little else than enjoy the beaches and sea, but if you want to look around, there are a few natural attractions worth seeking out. Prime among them is the Nam Tok Khlong Chao, the biggest of the accessible waterfalls on the island. It is about a half-hour trek to reach, but the reward of a dip in the large freshwater pool is worth the walk. Another attraction is the natural eeriness of the Khlong Chao mangrove swamps which can be explored by kayak. |

Koh Mai Si Lek guards the entrance to Ao Lax Uan bay. Koh Mai Si Lek is mainly notable for the presence of an airstrip used by the five-star resorts to fly in their VIP guests. Koh Raet Island – Koh KoodThe smaller of the offshore islands, Koh Raet is home to some of the best diving in the whole of the Koh Chang archipelago. The reefs are better preserved than most of the other dive sites; no doubt helped by its remoteness from the mass tourist market on the main island. {timg title:=”Koh Kood” thumb:=”images/stories/srv/properties/kohchangmarina/marinepark/kohkood1small.jpg” img:=”images/stories/srv/properties/kohchangmarina/marinepark/kohkood1.jpg” gal:=”gallery-content”} A Sailing Guide to Koh KoodKoh Kood is an excellent destination for adventurous leisure sailors in the Gulf of Thailand. The waters, scenery and easy availability of supplies make it prime cruising ground. A lighthouse marks the southern tip of the island. One especially appealing factor of Koh Kood is the traditional fishing village at Ao Salad that is known to warmly welcome and be especially accommodating of visiting sailors. The close proximity of the marine border with Cambodia is one thing of which sailors should be aware. Video waterfall Koh Kood
