This year the organisers are expecting over 300 sailing craft to take part, over 600 sailors in all, in what many are predicting will be the biggest event ever. The field in the multihull and keelboat contests is expected to be the largest ever with over 70 boats in total competing for the prestigious titles. There has been enormous interest from top sailors across Asia and the fleet includes skippers from Australia, New Zealand Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, the UK as well as Thailand and other Asian countries. Competition is likely to be particularly strong in the 40 foot category, with some of the finest sailors in Asian waters travelling to Pattaya to compete. Every winner of a major Asian regatta over the last year will be competing in the Top of the Gulf Regatta 2012, promising hotly competitive action and sailing skills of a truly international level. The event will also include, for the first time, the NeilPryde Racing Series, a one-design racing class for windsurfers. NeilPryde Racing had its inaugural racing tour last year to huge acclaim and is kicking off its 2012 tour at the Top of the Gulf Regatta. That NeilPryde have chosen Pattaya to underline the Top of the Gulf’s place as the premium Asian annual sailing event.

It means that small one-crew-boat local sailors can mingle and mix with international sailors of ocean going boats. This breadth of this event does not happen anywhere else in Asia. This gives young local sailors opportunity to learn from more experienced yachtsmen. It is an opportunity Thai sailors have grasped with both hands in their rise to becoming one of the most formidable Asian sailing nations. Thai sailing talent will be very much on view throughout the regatta, which will host the Thailand National Optimist Championship as part of the scheduled racing. The Top of the Gulf Regatta will also see Thai Olympic hopeful, Keerati Bualong, compete as part of his warm up for the 2012 London Games.
